After all, what better way to hide a book than placing it deep inside a pocket or a bag such that it can’t be discovered? One of our favorite novels of the twentieth century, *The Master and Margarita* \[Мастер и Mаргарита\], couldn’t be published in the lifetime of its author, Mikhail Bulgakov. Bulgakov wrote the novel in the decade before his death in 1940, but he could share it only with close friends due to its thinly veiled criticism of Stalinism. The novel wasn’t published as a book until 1967, and the first English-language translation included many omissions. It has since undergone new English-language translations, and the book often is considered among the greatest works of modern and contemporary fiction. But let’s get back to the question of the miniatures. Toward the end of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century, interest in Bulgakov resurged enormously in Russia. In response, in part, to his exclusion from the Russian literary canon during the era of the Soviet Union, a number of Russian presses have begun re-printing the novel in its original language. As if alluding to the once-clandestine nature of the book, many of these presses have created miniatures, often in multi-volume sets, of the novel. We’ll give you some information that will help you to track down some miniatures for your collection.      [Read more...](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/collecting-miniatures-of-the-master-and-margarita) --- ## [Buying Rare and Antiquarian Books in Dublin](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/buying-rare-and-antiquarian-books-in-dublin) By [Audrey Golden](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/author/audrey-golden). From W.B. Yeats to James Joyce to Seamus Heaney, there are many collectible Irish poets and writers. In addition, there are numerous novelists who have been published in Ireland and whose work relates to Ireland’s history of colonialism that is shared, in many ways, by numerous countries around the globe. If you’re traveling to Dublin, you should certainly look into the city’s expansive literary past, but you should also be sure to visit the fantastic used and rare bookstores in the city. In terms of rare and antiquarian books, the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) lists two sellers in the city (four in the country total). In addition, there are a number of rare and used shops, as well as a thriving weekend book market.      [Read more...](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/buying-rare-and-antiquarian-books-in-dublin) --- ## [Best Books from Japan](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/best-books-from-japan) By [Audrey Golden](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/author/audrey-golden). Or perhaps you’re familiar with “Lara’s Theme,” the song from the movie. At any rate, we bet you’re at least a little bit familiar with the love affair between the fictional characters of Yuri and Lara. A new book by Anna Pasternak, the granddaughter of Boris’s sister Josephine, reveals details of the love affair between Boris Pasternak and Olga Ivinskaya, which served as the inspiration for the novel. The book is entitled *Lara: the Untold Love Story and the Inspiration for Doctor Zhivago*. It was released in January 2017.      [Read more...](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/boris-pasternak-and-the-lost-story-of-lara) --- ## [Famous Literature Written from Prison](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/famous-literature-written-from-prison) By [Audrey Golden](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/author/audrey-golden). When we do, most of us are unlikely to imagine the confines of a prison cell. However, many canonical works of fiction, as well as significant twentieth-century political texts, [were drafted while their writers were incarcerated](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/authors-who-went-to-jail). In some cases, the texts directly address the writer’s imprisonment, while in others, the claustrophobic walls of a prison cell appear to have enabled the imaginative capacities of the novelist.      [Read more...](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/famous-literature-written-from-prison) --- ## [The Incendiary Politics of Michel Houellebecq](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/the-incendiary-politics-of-michel-houellebecq) By [Audrey Golden](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/author/audrey-golden). And if we enjoy reading one of his works of fiction, or if we find his work inspiring, do those sentiments reflect somehow upon our own politics? These are complicated questions, of course, and if you’re not familiar with Houellebecq, you might be wondering why we’re even asking them in the first place. To give you a quick primer: a recent headline in *The Guardian*\* read: “Michel Houellebecq: ‘Am I Islamophobic? Probably, yes.’” The writer has been described as “the ageing enfant terrible of French literature,” and *The Guardian* tells us that he “has been under 24-hour police protection since the Charlie Hebdo attack.” At the same time, Iggy Pop has found musical inspiration in Houellebecq’s work and, well, we think Iggy Pop is cool. Want to decide for yourself? We’ll tell you a little bit more about Houellebecq first.      [Read more...](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/the-incendiary-politics-of-michel-houellebecq) --- ## [Past and Future in Han Kang's Fiction](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/past-and-future-in-han-kangs-fiction) By [Audrey Golden](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/author/audrey-golden). We’re guessing you might have at least heard of *The Vegetarian* since it won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize for Fiction. The novel feels, in some ways, like a work of dystopian fiction in that it follows a woman who becomes a vegetarian after experiencing violent, bloody impulses all through a narration by her husband. Threads of futuristic writing may run through Han Kang’s fiction, but her work is also deeply permeated by the past. Her most recent novel, *Human Acts*, reflects upon the Gwanju massacre and its meaning for Korea in the present.      [Read more...](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/past-and-future-in-han-kangs-fiction) --- ## [Best Books on Ireland](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/best-books-on-ireland) By [Audrey Golden](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/author/audrey-golden). Yet many notable novelists and poets actually have attended law school, and even more have actually graduated and practiced law in some capacity. While it might sound strange to think of fiction or poetry writing and the study of law being interwoven, we believe there’s a close relationship between the thinking and reading practices that occur in both fields. To give you a sense of some of the distinct and varied writers who went to law school, we’d like to provide some information about a handful of poets and novelists and their experiences studying the law.      [Read more...](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/five-20th-century-writers-who-went-to-law-school) --- ## [Buying Rare and Antiquarian Books in Central Italy](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/buying-rare-and-antiquarian-books-in-central-italy) By [Audrey Golden](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/author/audrey-golden).
