He continued recording albums throughout his life, releasing *You Want It Darker* (2016) the year of his death. Yet Cohen was also a poet and novelist, and early first editions of his written work are quite valuable, rare, and elusive. Whether you’re interested in Cohen’s music and want to expand your vinyl collection to include rare books, or you’re starting a book collection made up of works by musicians (yes, there are quite a few musicians who have also published books of poetry and fiction), we want to supply you with some of the information you’ll need to start collecting. Numerous subgenres, such as psychological horror, gothic fiction, and supernatural horror, there are all kinds of terrors to explore. Horror fiction finds its roots in religious stories and folklore in which death, the afterlife, and evil often transpose these concepts onto people or creatures, thereby creating many of the core tenets of horror today, like witches, monsters, ghosts, and other such staples. These creatures and spirits appear in classical Greek and Roman texts. Gothic fiction arose in the 18th century with classic books like T*he Mysteries of Udolpho* by Ann Radcliffe. Horror as we know it took off in 19th-century fiction with the popularity of novels and novellas like *Frankenstein* by Mary Shelly, *Dracula* by Bram Stoker, and *The Strange Case of* *Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* by [Robert Louis Stevenson](https://www.bookstellyouwhy.com/advSearchResults.php?action=search&fromForm=1&category_id=&authorField=robert+louis+stevenson&titleField=&publisherField=&keywordsField=&dp1=&dp2=&priceStart=&priceEnd=&orderBy=mostrecent&recordsLength=25&firstEd=&signed=&jacket=), generating a buzz around the budding genre. Horror fiction exploded in the 20th century, gaining new traction with the advent of motion pictures and has become an enduring staple of modern collections thanks to popular writers such as Stephen King and [Anne Rice](https://www.bookstellyouwhy.com/advSearchResults.php?action=search&fromForm=1&category_id=&authorField=anne+rice&titleField=&publisherField=&keywordsField=&dp1=&dp2=&priceStart=&priceEnd=&orderBy=mostrecent&recordsLength=25&firstEd=&signed=&jacket=). Yet more than many authors coming out of the Midwest, Carl Sandburg’s works truly conjure images of rolling prairies and Midwestern cityscapes. Although Sandburg ended up spending the last part of his life in rural Western North Carolina, the subject matter of his poems, biographical writings, and other texts always hearken back to the middle part of the country. From visualizations of cornfields and cornhuskers to biographical writings about Abraham Lincoln, Sandburg’s work is firmly rooted in Illinois soil. And although he spent more than two decades at his Flat Rock, North Carolina home, his ashes ultimately were buried in Galesburg, Illinois in 1967. Given the deep connection between Sandburg’s work and the Midwest, we want to give you some tips and advice for building a “Midwest” collection featuring the books of Carl Sandburg.      [Read more...](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/building-a-carl-sandburg-collection) --- ## ['Twas the Night Before Christmas: The Authorship Question](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/twas-the-night-before-christmas) By [Shelley Kelber](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/author/shelley-kelber). The poem is credited with connecting St. Nicholas to Christmas and planted the seeds that led to our idea of Santa Claus. Like many authors, Shelley did not live to see his fame. During his life, he kept good company with other writers and poets, including his wife Mary Shelley née Godwin, author of *Frankenstein*, the Lord Byron, and John Keats. Due to the radical themes in his work, Shelley had difficulty finding a publisher, but he is now considered one of the paragons of English Romanticism.      [Read more...](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/ten-beautiful-percy-shelley-quotes) --- [Next page](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/topic/poetry/page/2) [See a listing of all posts](https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/all) | | | --- | This is a search field with an auto-suggest feature attached. - There are no suggestions because the search field is empty. ### About this blog How can I identify a first edition?
